Winner of the 2008 “Best Theater Company” award from the San Francisco Bay Guardian, the Un-Scripted Theater Company challenges the notion that all improv theater is the same. From improvised musicals to improvised Shakespeare, the actors at Un-Scripted have proven that theater without a script can be compelling as well as comedic. Every night of Un-Scripted: unscripted, their latest 2-hour show, the cast will pull together a completely new kind of improv show. The cast won’t be talking about what is happening on stage before they go out in front of the audience, nor will they be stopping the show to explain what scene, song, or game will be happening next. With no set plots, characters, scripts, or set-lists, Un-Scripted: unscripted is a variety show that is as much of a surprise for the cast while they‘re on stage, as it is for those who come see it.

The Un-Scripted Theater Company is holding auditions for our next show,
"Three," which will take place in San Francisco in March 2008. A stipend
will be provided for all cast members.

About the show: Each night three improvisors will take the stage and
perform three improvised plays based on audience suggestions.

"Three" will perform Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights throughout the
month of March, with one or two rehearsals per week from the end of
January through the end of the run. This show is a full-length, 2-hour
improv show consisting of three intertwining improvised plays, similar to
the triptych format. We will switch between three different stories from
scene to scene, with each story embodying a different play genre. With
only 3 cast members in each show, we are looking for improvisors who have
a committed and theatrical style who can also play a variety of characters
and carry one-third of a 2-hour improv show.

Auditions will be Tuesday or Thursday evening, January 22 or 24. To
request a slot, e-mail christian-at-un-scripted.com, with your full name,
email address, phone number, and an indication of whether you'd prefer
Tuesday or Thursday. We'll get back to you by email and confirm time and
location, and also send you more detailed information about what we're
looking for.

The Un-Scripted Theater Company is holding auditions for our next show:
Let It Snow! An Improvised Holiday Musical

About the show: Celebrate the holidays with an improvised musical,
Un-Scripted style! Filled with good old-fashioned Broadway singing and
dancing... all made up on the spot through the magic of improv. No
songbooks, no choreography, no scripts. Like snowflakes, no two shows are
the same. Let us chase away your winter doldrums and put you in the
holiday spirit!

The show will perform Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from mid-November to
mid-December, and there'll be one and occasionally two rehearsals per
week, through the end of the run. It's a full-length improvised musical,
inspired by the real hometown of an audience member. Un-Scripted has
already performed runs of this show twice before, to enthusiastic reviews
and great audience response.

Auditions will be Monday and Tuesday evening, September 10 and 11.
Auditions will start at 7:30, so plan to be there at 7:15. To sign up for
a slot, e mail christian@un-scripted.com, and if applicable, give us a date
preference. You'll be scheduled for one evening of auditions. Plan to stay
about two hours, and be ready to improvise songs and dances. Our auditions
are also friendly and non-indimidating, so be ready to have a good time,
as well. For more information about our auditions and our company, visit

Learn to Improvise Like Un-Scripted
Un-Scripted presents: a series of classes on how to improvise like Un-Scripted! As with most Bay Area improv companies, Un-Scripted has its own style focus. We're interested in rich, theatrical improv, with a colorful story and clear main characters. Students may attend any or all of the classes. All classes are at the SF Playhouse, Stage 2. Classes 1, 2, 4, and 5 are $40 each or $120 for all four of them togeather. Each class starts at noon and runs for 3 hours (except class 3). Please e mail an instructor to sign up for a class or for more information.

Class 1: Sunday, October 8 -- Genres! Part 1
Go beyond the cliches! We'll explore the characters, environments, and acting style of a variety of genres, so we can practice living in a world, instead of just visiting. Genres Part 1 is likely to include literary and historical genres, such as Shakespeare.
Taught by: Mandy Khoshnevisan, mandy@un-scripted.com

Class 2: Sunday, October 15 -- Genres! Part 2
Go beyond the cliches! We'll explore the characters, environments, and acting style of a variety of genres, so we can practice living in a world, instead of just visiting. Genres Part 2 is likely to include the wide realm of science fiction and adventure.
Taught by: Dave Dyson, dave@un-scripted.com

Class 3: Saturday, October 21 -- Improvising Arthur Miller!
Get up close and personal with the dark side of the American Dream. Afterwards you'll have the opportunity to see one of Arthur Miller's later plays, The Ride Down Mt. Morgan, performed at the SF Playhouse. Your ticket to the show is included in the price of the class!
Taught by: Tara McDonough, tara@un-scripted.com

Class 4: Sunday, October 22 -- Protagonist!
Who's the story about? In this class, we'll do scenes in all kinds of genres, with a focus on how to find the protagonist, and then figure out who's with them--and who's against. We'll work on how all that stuff called "acting" works on the improv stage.
Taught by: Christian Utzman, christian@un-scripted.com

Class 5: Sunday, October 29 -- Style-Matching!
Style-Matching is one of the most valuable skills we use at the Un-Scripted Theater Company. What kind of scene am I in? What kind of show am I in? What kind of improvisors am I on stage with? What kind of improvisor am I? You'll learn to follow the clues and figure it out. Hone your style-matching skills, and watch as genres magically appear!

It's not too early to sign on for the Ride of the Season! SuperTrain needs Conductors (House Managers), Engineers (popcorn makers), and Track Workers (Ushers). The audience will be treated as passengers on a train, so if you feel inspired to wear overalls and play a character as you work, we would LOVE it.

This show runs October 5-28 Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm SF Playhouse (533 Sutter, between Powell and Mason. 2nd Stage). Call for volunteers is at 6:30.

Your support is greatly appreciated. We'd love to have you as part of the SuperTrain crew! This is a real, constructive, hands-on way to support the arts.
Imagine a train so enormously huge, anything could happen on it. Thats the setting of Un-Scripteds next show, SuperTrain. Well follow the adventures of the crew and passengers of this massive train as it rolls across the countryside. Who knows what theyll encounter each nightdinosaurs? A volcano? Time travel? A romantic dinner?

That’s something isn’t it? You’re attractive and suave enough that your sense of humor can reel in the ladies. Of course they won’t remember having met you in the morning, but you’ve got a solution for that.
Improv for Shy People
Saturday, January 28, 2006
1pm - 4:30pm
San Francisco location
Cost: $45

Improv for Shy People is a gentle dip into the improv waters. The class tends to be folks who are new to improv but more experienced improvisors are also welcomed. This class provides a low-key, non-competitive environment where improv can be explored at your own pace. Improv is a wonderful tool to both get past shyness AND appreciate the positive aspects of being shy.

Improv for Shy People meets one time a month and each class is unique!

The Women’s Business Improv Group
Sunday, February 5, 2006
2pm-4:30pm
San Francisco location
Cost: $30

While working with women improvisers who come from myriad professions, I’ve seen (and experienced for myself) how improv can help move through “blocks” both professional and personal. More than a support group, the Women’s Business Improv Group is a chance to connect, share experiences, improvise solutions and build new skills that will help you be successful while being yourself.

Improv for the Helping Professions
Sunday, February 19, 2006
1pm - 4:30pm
San Francisco location
Cost: $45

Although many elements of the helping professions vary by job (creative arts therapist, social worker, doctor, nurse, EMT, paramedic, life coach, teacher, therapist), we all need to make quick connections with folks, often under stressful circumstances. In this class we'll explore how improv skills can help you feel grounded, improve your ability to "read" the moment and create richer, more satisfying interactions with your patients and clients.

February - March
Love at First Sight, an Improvised Romantic Comedy

One of the most popular film genre's of all time comes to the improv stage. Sit back and watch the zany mishaps that happen whenever two people fall in love.

May
The Impossible Film Project

Ever seen a movie mere moments after it was shot? While the crew is still out shooting the rest of it? It's as close to a "live" movie as you can get, and it's all improvised from your suggestions.

July - August
You Bet Your Improvisor

This hit improvised game show promises to make winners of us all by tickling our funny bones, but you can also win valuable prizes as an audience contestant, if you bet your improvisor!

October
Supertrain

Adventure. Excitement. Hilarity. The world's largest and fastest train is on a collision course with fun. Will any of the passengers survive? Will you?

December
Musical
Will it be Let It Snow? Will it be something else? We don't know, but it will be a musical.

By Julie O'Shea (Excerpts)
Theater Bay Area
November 2005 Issue

About five years ago, improvisational theatre underwent something of a cultural revolution. Companies started popping up all over the place, each trying to carve a unique niche in the Bay Area's vibrant, fast growing theatre scene. The art form was suddenly hip, suddenly chic and suddenly everywhere, from uptown bars to downtown clubs to cable TV.

Some have argued that shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Curb Your Enthusiasm has helped revive this old theatre technique and make it new again. But Drew Carey and Larry David can't take all the credit here.

Improv theatre has also blossomed under the dedication, excitement and drive of many small local groups that seem to have materialized starting around the late 1990's. Do an Internet search for Bay Area troupes and classes and dozens of names appear on the screen. Gone are the days of performing in small out-of-the-way comedy-sports clubs.

Scripted acting and improvised theater go hand in had notes Shaun Landry, one of the founding members of the San Francisco Improv Alliance and Oui Be Negroes. For instance, says Landry, if someone forgets a line in the middle of a scripted scene, an actor who's taken a few improv classes can easily steer the action to where it needs to go.

"Each [theatre technique] complements the other" Landry says "Having them both together is a dream” What’s more, Landry adds, is that improv is now being seen as a "viable format" for auditions.

We've got some fun classes coming up. Post here or message me for info on registration:

INTRO TO IMPROV - Starts this Monday (six week series)

In this class you will learn a bit of improv theory, but most of all you will
practice improv exercises, play improv games, and act out improvised scenes with your fellow classmates. Informative, yes, but also ridiculously fun.

Our teaching philosophy is to create safe environment where you will feel free to create without fear of judgment. We encourage students to take all six classes, but drop-ins are welcome. Come give it a try!

Instructors: Dave Dyson and Glenn Etter
Monday nights, 7:00pm - 8:45pm
October 24 - November 28
2015 Center Street, Berkeley (near Berkeley BART)
Cost $15 per class prepaid, $20 per class drop-in

IMPROV FOR SHY PEOPLE - Saturday, November 13

Improv is a gentle dip into the improv waters. The class tends to be folks who are new to improv, but more experienced improvisers are also welcome. This class provides a low-key, non-competitive environment where improv can be explored at your own pace. Improv is a wonderful tool to both get past shyness AND appreciate the positive aspects of being shy.

Instructor: Susan Snyder
November 13, 1:00pm - 4:30pm
San Francisco location
Cost: $45 ($35 prepaid)

INTERMEDIATE IMPROV - Starts this Monday (six week series)

Learn the skills that make improvised scenes compelling, entertaining, and more enjoyable. Subjects explored include narrative, characters, raising the stakes, "what's the scene about," and reacting and connecting to your partner. You will receive more feedback on your improv, but again our philosophy is to maintain a safe, supportive environment where you will feel free to play and take risks.

Instructors: Dave Dyson and Glenn Etter
Monday nights, 9:00pm - 10:30pm
October 24 - November 28
Location: 2015 Center Street, Berkeley (near Berkeley BART)
Cost: $15 per class prepaid, $20 per class drop-in
Students may also attend the beginning classes for an additional $10 per class
Thanks for the advice about improv. I originally took Dave and Glenn's intro class just for fun as a way to meet people after moving to California, and also to stretch my personal "envelope" a little out of the comfort zone. Years of engineering work has taken it's toll on my funnybone. I was amazed when the exercises re-awakened a sense of childhood creativity in me that I didn't realize I had lost. I've definitely been bitten by the improv bug and hope to see ya'll again someday.

Thanks.
Rapid-fire filmmaking contests, such as Cinemasports' now-worldwide fest, are a little gimmicky--single takes are fine for actors, but editing should never be an improv act. The Un-Scripted Theater Company, however, takes the idea to such an absurd length that it's practically avant-garde. The aptly titled "Impossible Film Project" creates a movie minutes before showtime, based on suggestions from the very audience attending the show. Confused? Let's break it down: Improv actors, armed with cameras, hit the streets after you tell them what you want to see. Somehow this becomes a film in "mere minutes," as promised by Un-Scripted on its Web site. Can the group pull it off? It already did in New York. The show starts at 7:30 pm (and continues through August 30) at the Dark Room, 2263 Mission (at 18th Street), SF. Admission is $8-12; call 401-7987 or visit www.darkroomsf.com.

Those of you on our mailing list know we usually summarize the weekend's shows in the email. The nature of this show makes that pretty difficult, so I thought I'd post a more detailed summary of the segments I was in and see if anyone else from the cast wants to elaborate on their segments.

For those of you unfamiliar with the show, we tell three stories a night, but the cast of one story doesn’t really get to see the other stories. That’s why I only know what happened in the segments I was in.

Thursday: Fugitive Therapy directied by Jason
Suggestion: A white hat (actual physical object from the audience)
This action-packed story started off with a bang with Jack (Dave) running over Mark (Joel) with his car (see it on Week 1 Highlight Reel on our website now: http://www.un-scripted.com/shows/videos/week1.htm). But was it really Jack or his evil twin? Jack flees from the law convinced of his innocence.

Enter the detective team, played by Alan and Lindy (who’s character names I forget). The recently “ex’d” detectives try not to let their personal live interfere with the investigation with limited success. They chase Jack throughout the Mission cornering him in the Dark Room Theater before he slips away.

This roller-coaster story ends with two surprising twists that leave Alan and Lindy back in each other’s arms and Jack a free man.

I ask you, why do I feel like I can’t spoil the ending when you can’t see the show again? I don’t know, but that’s what you get for not being there to see the show yourself.

The other Thursday stories involved a group of guys hanging out on the town that ended with Elan kissing Amber (also viewable on the Week 1 Highlight Reel) and the third one I didn’t really see at all except one bit where Joel and Carla were singing.

Friday: A Bewitched Romance directed by Maya
Suggestion: A coffee maker and a belt (also actual objects from the audience)
I got paired with Lindy again for this tale, and again I can’t remember our character names. Switching to third person: Alan has one day to visit San Francisco and arranges a personalized guided tour led by his former High School friend Lindy. Lindy show him around the Mission (because that’s where you should spend your time if you’ve only got 1 day in San Francisco). Along the way, she reveals some magical powers, conjuring coffee out of mid-air, and taking Alan to the magical store of Fabuloid, where he buys a magic belt.

Eventually Lindy gets in trouble from Waldor (Christian) for revealing to Alan that she is indeed a witch. Alan and Lindy get put into Witch Jail at the Whiz Burger pending the results of their trial. They take that opportunity to fall madly in love, as one does in those types of situations. When Waldor returns he gives the couple two choices: 1. Lindy pays a $35 fine and Alan is put to death or 2. Lindy loses her powers and becomes mortal and Alan pays the $35 fine. Lindy shocks Waldor by choosing mortality. But Alan and Lindy still have some magic in their lives thanks to the magic belt.

There, that’s a pretty comprehensive recount of that segment. One of the other stories was a real heart-felt drama. Unfortunately they had trouble with their sound and the last segment came back with out any sound. So the actors dubbed it live. The other story involved Jennifer having a fear of water as the result of peeing her pants in front of a store as a child. You can see that on the Highlight Reel too.

Saturday: A Pho Sit-Com directed by Dave
Suggestion: Pho (Vietnamese Beef Soup & what an audience member had eaten for lunch)
This story followed a classic sit-com formula with three room-mates Bella (Kathy), Leena (Carla) and Bella’s nephew Phil (Alan) along with their wacky next-door neighbor Ed (Jeff). (Hey, I remembered all the names!) When Bella wants money to buy a new bed, Phil and Leena seek Ed’s advice on money making schemes. They decide to make & sell Pho to earn money to buy Legos that they can then sell to earn the money to buy Bella the bed. The plan unravels though when Bella eats all the soup. Leena and Ed finally sleep together (after all we’d been waiting the entire series for it to finally happen), and Bella loves the soup so much, she doesn’t need a new bed. After all, all you need is Pho!

Amber directed a Behind the Improv mockumentary style piece for Saturday night. The other story involved the Chicken-ati, a secret society based around chickens.

I’ll be directing this weekend. We’ll see what kinds of crazy things happen!

Hey Guys,
The San Francisco Bay Guardian's "Best of the Bay" poll is going on again. It would be so great if Un-Scripted won this year. Please, if you can, take a moment and vote for us as "Best Theater Company" we might have a chance.

They have eliminated both the "best improv group" and "best comedy group" this year, so we're up against all the huge theater companys in the "Best Theater Company" category.

They have, however, made it much easier to vote. They make you sign in now, so you can answer a few categories, go away, and then come back and pick up where you left off. It was overwhelming in the past because there were just too many choices you had to answer all at once.

Now you can vote for The Un-Scripted Theater Company for "Best Theater Company" and come back and vote for other stuff later.

Happy Voting!

Good news! First, I joined tribe.net today. It was alarming but motivating to learn that I had zero friends.

Second, we got a space for our upcoming beginning/intermediate classes in the East Bay. Yes! And it only took 37 phone calls.

Here's the info:

Classes start Monday, April 4, and run for 6 weeks. All classes are on Monday nights, to help with those Monday blues. Beginning sessions are from 7-9, intermediate from 9-10:30. Intermediate students can come to the beginning session if they like.

The general aim of the classes is to have fun, be spontaneous, and explore various aspects of improv in a supportive and safe environment. It is a good aim. Dave and Glenn are your humble (yet impossibly skilled) improv teachers.

Classes take place at 2015 Center St. (at Milvia) in Berkeley, a block from Berkeley BART. Prices are $15/class for intermediate, $20/class for beginning, $25/class for both.

A description of the classes will go up on the website fairly soon, assuming we get our act together, which we will, because as mentioned we are impossibly skilled.

Let us know if you're interested! We'd love to have any of you there.
